Kyoto
Kyoto is synonymous with old and traditional Japan. There are stunning temples, shrines, gardens, bamboo groves and palaces, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Stay in a ryokan inn, indulge in kaiseki dining, the formal style of multiple courses of precise dishes, or enjoy some of the prefecture’s famous green tea. Outside the prefectural capital are even more historic and scenic attractions, including Miyama’s thatched-roof farmhouses.
This Kyoto temple is—literally—on the money!
Byodoin, in Uji City, is often referred to as the most beautiful building in Japan. It is also the country's most viewed temple because its image is depicted on the reverse of the ¥10 coin.
